Gallagher Doc Watson G-70 Description
Gallagher Doc Watson – In the world of acoustic instruments, Gallagher guitars are held in the very highest regard by many world-class players for making truly exceptional instruments. Gallagher were formed as a company in 1965 in Tennessee, USA. and their instruments have found particular favour with bluegrass musicians due to their exceptional tone and playability. Doc Watson is one such musician who in fact regularly played a G70.
Gallagher are the ‘secret custom shop’ for acoustic guitars and they keep handwritten records of absolutely every customer and guitar. They have a long waiting list, hence their guitars are rare and highly sought after. From 1965 to 2005 for example, only 3037 instruments were actually made, so that’s around 75 a year. Their instruments are unlike any other acoustic guitars on the market and you just have to play one to understand what all the fuss is about. Music just seems to come alive more with a Gallagher acoustic and that is probably an understatement.
The G70 was the first rosewood model that was built by Gallagher and it is a traditional acoustic guitar utilising only the best of Indian rosewoods and a choice Sitka spruce top. The G70 is bound with classic ivoroid binding and the body and rosette are trimmed with herringbone. The guitar is fitted with an ebony fingerboard and bridge, and the headstock and fingerboard are bound with ivoroid. The stunningly crafted fingerboard is inlayed with mother of pearl diamonds and squares. Internally, the bracing system for the G70 is the traditional Gallagher voiced x- bracing. No expense has been spared with the materials in the construction of this guitar and the craftsmanship is simply world class.
This instrument is perfect for those seeking a versatile acoustic guitar that will give them a deep bottom end perfect for playing those open string bluegrass runs and it will also supply the bright yet clear high end so associated with the sound of rosewood instruments. The guitar will suit both flat pickers and finger style guitarists in equal measure and we were stunned at the range of tones that could be produced by this guitar. There is a richness and detail in chords and single notes on the G70 that quite simply don’t exist on lesser quality guitars. It would be a dream guitar for recording as well as live performance.
