1981 Gibson ES-335TD Description
This classic Gibson thinline dates from 1981, looks terrific and plays superbly. The added good news is that it’s also in very good condition throughout. It’s no surprise that the Gibson ES-335 ranks extremely high in the list of iconic electric guitars and it has been a firm favourite with many legendary guitar players over the years, including Eric Clapton, Alvin Lee, Larry Carlton and Eric Johnson to name but a few.
The sheer versatility of the ES-335 is a major part of the reason for it’s long lasting popularity and this particular model also comes with a factory fitted coil tap enabling you to easily achieve those ‘out-of’phase’ guitar tones ala Peter Green. A very nice touch.
The build and design of this guitar is a good as you’d expect from a high-end Gibson and the neck in particular has a lovely slim 60’s feel to it. The frets and nut are original and with little noticeable wear.
As soon as you plug this guitar into a good quality tube amp you immediately have all those wonderfully rich and articulate guitar tones that everyone associates with the ES-335. The neck pickup is warm and highly responsive, making it ideal for jazz or fusion players and the bridge pickup has all the growl and bite that you could ever want for rock or blues solos.
The aforementioned coil-tap switch is a very useful extra tone colour, enabling thinner sounds that aren’t typically associated with the ES-335. This is a highly versatile instrument that will certainly appeal to players who need real tonal variety from one guitar.
The overall condition is very good with only some marks on the back on the neck, probably from many a night where the guitar was lent against an amp between sets. It comes with the original hard case and of course all the kudos of playing one of the most popular guitars ever made. A classic.
