You really got to love the Gibson 175. It’s a design icon, it’s a legend, and it’s a fabulous guitar to hold and play. It feels good – uncompromising quality good. The 16” body is comfortable to hold, the pointed Florentine cutaway gives easy clear access all the way up the fingerboard.

The 175’s humbucking pickups are clear, powerful and very sweet. They can be jazz, rock, blues, indie, funk, soul, anything you want really because this guitar has got soul. Yes, it probably comes from the way the sound is developed inside that 3½” deep body cavity and yes, this pickup is the direct descendant of Seth Lover’s original humbucker design that meant Gibson guitars defined the sound of rock and roll in the sixties.

OK, so we like 175s! What’s the deal with this one?
Well, it’s in wonderful condition and even comes with the original warranty booklet, which is how we like them here at JGG. Incredibly, this vintage Gibson 175 is nearly 40 years old, yet has been played carefully and treasured. The only sign of wear is on the top of the neck over the 2nd fret, suggesting a player who wrapped his or her thumb over the top to reach the low E string. Perhaps the best of all is the colour that the cherry sunburst has faded down to. It’s known as ice tea / iced tea sunburst, and it is lovely.

In a side-by-side comparison with the 66 we had, the only real difference was the colour of the knobs - they played and sounded the same, but this guitar is £500 less!
